A working farm, ten kilometres out.

Nieufontein lies on the R302, ten kilometres outside Malmesbury: fifty-three hectares under vine, two hundred and seventy-four hectares of wheat and canola turning over with the seasons, and an 1890s werf that has been standing long enough to look like it grew there. It is a real farm that also happens to make a very good set.

What grows here

Fifty-three hectares of vine

Six varietals across 53.44 hectares - Colombar and Pinotage on bush vine going back to 1988, through to a young Cabernet Sauvignon block planted in 2019. Swartland soil, Swartland weather, and rows that have been farmed properly for a long time.

Wheat and canola

Two hundred and seventy-four hectares in a wheat and canola rotation, plus three hectares of vegetable patches. The farm changes colour completely between May and November - green, then gold, then that ridiculous canola yellow.

Ten minutes from town

Malmesbury is ten kilometres down the R302 for fuel, food, hardware and a pharmacy; Cape Town is about an hour. Close enough to shoot a day out of the city, far enough that nothing you see has a suburb behind it.

Film and stills

Everything a crew needs is already standing.

Nieufontein has hosted film and stills crews for years - commercials, series, catalogue, drone work. The farm carries on around you, which is usually the point: the tractor in the background is a real tractor.

The vines

Six varietals, uncontracted

53.44 hectares across six varietals, from 1988 bush vine to a 2019 Cabernet block. The fruit is not tied up at the moment, so if you are a cellar looking for Swartland grapes, we would happily show you the blocks and talk.

Wheat one season, canola the next, vines all year. The farm never looks the same twice.
